The 11th Gift and Tree Funtime

Ooh what’s this shiny gift? It’s a bonus gift! Here’s how you get it…

1. Log in on Saturday December 26, 2009, the day after Christmas. The time you would have to log in is between midnight on the Friday 25th and midnight on the Saturday 26th Central time (USA). Our international users will have to do a little math.

That’s all you have to do! Log in on Saturday December 26, 2009!

2. We will hand it out on Monday Dec 28, 2009 sometime during the day. Please be patient and allow us to take all day to hand out the bonus gift. There will be a lot of people getting it so it could take a while to hand them all out.

When Graphics Programmers Cook…

Renderman’s been in the kitchen, baking up a fresh batch of awesomesauce casserole…

ROBLOX has updated the Sparkles effect and has added a new Smoke particle system!

Some possible uses for smoke in your levels:

• Jet fighter exhaust
• Smoldering tire fires
• Hot chocolate steam
• Signal flares
• Smoke grenades
• Kitchen catastrophes
• Acursed zombie hazetrails
• Ghosts
• Tail pipes of race cars and trucks
• BBQs

Smoke has a lot of properties that you can play with to create different effects. Here’s a rundown of some of the more interesting ones:

Color – Quite simple. The color of the smoke.

Enabled – If checked, the smoke is “on”. If unchecked, the smoke is “off”. This can be a useful property for scripters.

Opacity – The “thickness” of the smoke. 0 is clear, 1 is completely solid.

RiseVelocity – The velocity of the particles along the Y-axis (up/down). 0 means the smoke hovers and is good for fog. A high number would be good for a signal fire. A negative number can be used to create spooky mist effect.

Size – The size of the particles. Huge particles will slow down old computers.

FAQ

1. When will the gifts open?

They will open between now and the end of the month. No telling exactly when! They open automatically, you don’t have to do anything special once you have the unopened gift.

2. Why didn’t I get the gift for free?

Each gift has a specific requirement. The user must meet the requirement at the exact time that Telamon gives out the gift. If the user misses the window of opportunity they can still buy the unopened gift.

3. Can I get the gift for free if I am banned?

Yes.

4. How do I get the gift for free?

This is the fun part! We want the you to try and work it out for yourselves. The staff and Builderman will not be able to give you hints about the remaining unopened gifts. Go to the forums and try to work it out among yourselves. Ask for hints and give suggestions!

Bring on the bubbly – introducing “Bubble Chat”

ROBLOX now has two ways to chat! Before today, Robloxian’s were forced to chat with a scrolling view on the side of their screen of all chat text. Now you can set up your place so that chat occurs in cartoon-like "bubbles" as well. This is especially fun for social games where you want to watch the other players.

But we know that some users in Roblox don’t like change, so we’ve made Bubble Chat an option for place owners. Simply go to the “Configure this Place” option on your showcase and you can change the chat settings for visitors to your place.

ROBLOX Thanksgiving Turkey Hunt

It’s time to catch some gobblers! Head to our Turkey Hunting grounds and see how many you can gather up. To catch a turkey, all you have to do is grab it. The sparkly turkeys are worth more points, and make your character run faster. You can only hold 6 turkeys at a time. Once you’ve got 6, run back to the table near the starting house to drop them off and get points. You have 5 minutes to get more points than anyone else in the level! You can also mess with the other players by knocking them back with your trusty Staff of the Winds.
